But no one could have written a better story than the one and only "Penultimate Blue Moon of the Millennium" at Jay B. Starkey Park in Pasco County Florida. Just to quickly explain the name of our run; a Blue Moon is the second full moon in a given month, and penultimate means: next to the last. So another way of saying the race name would be "the next to last blue moon of the millennium". Not quite as catchy, or may I say, educational. There were a total of 4 different trail runs, 50 miles, 50K, Half Marathon, and 5K and 104 finishers. There was something for every runner; large and small, young and old. For many, like Susan Glickman and Mona St. German, Bob Wehr and Marilyn Barger,it was their first ultra, and for many others in the half marathon and 5K,W their first trail run experience. Elaine Anthony and Pam Dickens did an excellent job as the race organizers. The two ultras began at 6:00 am under the moon and stars, and a cool (for Florida) morning and the half marathon began at 8:00 am. The 5k started at 5 pm. The trail was well marked with both glow sticks and tape to make sure we did not have any lost souls. The 50 milers ran three 13.3 mile lollipop loops and one 10.4 out and back, the 50 K was three 10.4 out and back. There were not any hills to climb, but one thing that did climb was the temperature which was in the high 70ís by mid-afternoon. The aid stations were staffed by the St. Petersburg Jr. College Veterinary Technician Society. They did an superb job keeping track of the runners and making sure they had enough water, ERG and food during the race. There were inspirational signs up on the course which would help you roll away the miles, like "Its not how you feel, its how you look Ö SMILE"., or "Its not important how fast you run, its that you are still moving forward that counts". There were medals (clay medallions) given to all the finishers of each race, and awards went to the men and women winners of each race, the penultimate and caboose runner in each race, the oldest runners in the two ultras, and the youngest runners in the half marathon and 5k. Montrail trail shoes donated a pair of trail running shoes to two lucky runners: Matt Mahoney and Kathleen Wheeler. We have received so many positive e-mails from the runners like Don McNelly and Marilyn Barger with comments like "AWESOME!" and "See you soon under another moon." Everyone had a good time, and the question everyone had was, " What about next year?" Pam and Elaine, in following with their caboose tradition, presented their "Perfect Cheer". Hopefully it will help answer the question. The moon was blue. It was our clue We must put on a race. January 30th, in '99 And Starkey was the place. We call it the penultimate for March is blue also. At 6:05 we started. Off and away we go! 50K or 50 miles, half marathoners, too. And then there was a 5K. We can not forget you. The run was fun, with tons of sun. Many smiles did abound. Back and forth and through the woods. Aid stations, they were found. The food was good, the people great! What a way to celebrate. Let's toast and cheer. We'll see you next year; When the new millennium is here! We hope to see you under the first full moon of the new millennium. "P" & "E"
