Space Coast Runners 20th Annual Marathon - February 17,1991 Melbourne, Fl. Last year's defending champion, Peter Maher from Canada, returned February 17th for the 20th running of our Marathon, and return he did with a vengeance. Running what he described as a hard training run, he knocked 20 minutes off his time from last year. Ideal weather, combined with an Olympian's talent (and a 2:12pr), resulted in a two minute reduction in the race record. Peter's time of 2:18:39 broke the race record of 2:20:37 set in 1976 by Dean Foster (also from Canada), and made Peter the first sub 2:20 marathoner in the race's history. His time was also ten minutes faster than the course record set by Carlos Talbott in 1989. It was suggested that this may very well be the fastest time for any Florida Marathon this year. I will try and keep you posted. Peter's nearest competitor was Jim Musante of Winter Park. Jim was 23 minutes back in a very respectable time of 2:41:54. Rob Nickolls of Gainesville Florida was third in 2:43:57. Space Coast Runner's Board Member, Jorge Abreu was the first local finisher with a time of 2:49:33. Max Rhodes returned to defend his wheelchair title and finished in 3:31:43, off his 3:02:29 time from last year. In the woman's division, Cathy Corsitt-Damon provided those of us who remained with a dramatic finish. Cathy , who's personal best was 3:07 and ultimately hopes to break 2:45 and qualify for the Olympic Trials, threw in a strong sprint at the end to finish under the magical 3 hour mark. Encouraged by her husband, who let her know how close she was, Cathy race the clock and won, finishing in 2:59:26. Her time was close to the race record of 2:56:11 set by Susan Faber back in 1988. With that time, Cathy becomes one of only three women to break the 3 hour barrier. Cathy's effort made the woman's overall race no closer than the men's overall race was. Chris Cunningham was second overall in a time of 3:27:57 and Karene Wiggins was third overall in 3:34:00. Pat Dixon of Merritt Island was the first Space Coast Runner with a time of 3:54:23. Pat is quite pleased with her time, so be sure and ask her about it. As she made the last turn into the straightaway to the finish, she could be heard celebrating her Boston qualifying performance. Pat was in good company. Out of the 130 finishers, 40 ran times that would qualify them for Boston. That's 30% for those who care about stats like that and don't have your calculator handy. It was suggested that we identify those who did qualify and their names are included below. Congratulations to you all. All in all it was a great day for the race. After last years oven fest which baked the runners, we were treated to great conditions for running and great performances for watching. I talked to several runners at Red Lobster who said they'd run the race and gave it high marks. Congratulations and thanks to race director Bill Dillard and his crew for a fine job and for countless hours of work put in in to pull it off. One final note. No, it was not me who gave the paper the list of local runners to keep an eye on and I am sorry if my performance disappointed you. Only the prospect of losing my Fastest Guy in Controls title to Rob Weaver (which I did anyway) , kept me from dropping out at the half after the BCC loop. BOSTON: The following runners ran times in this year's Space Coast Marathon that can provide them with an official entry into this year's or next year's Boston Marathon. - GEORGE REVELS MALES Pete Maherr 2:18:39 Jim Musante 2:41:54 Rob Nickolls 2:43:57 Richard Kozlin 2:43:58 John Mulhearn 2:45:34 Gary Cohen 2:49:17 Jorge Abreu 2:49:33 Tony Coulson 2:49:54 Paul Weber 2:50:13 Paul Reich 2:50:33 Keith Jeffries 2:55:43 Addison Palmer 2:57:12 John McCall 3:00:58 Tim Marsteiner 3:04:49 Phil Little 3:05:38 Charles Talley 3:06:25 Marty Winkel 3:09:26 Duncan Stearns 3:09:59 Bob Heamesch 3:10:56 Neil Hawkins 3:12:27 Bill Menard 3:13:36 Michael Willin 3:13:59 John Rehkop 3:15:11 David Klinger 3:15:27 Michael Sheffey 3:15:45 Mike Madaus 3:16:02 Marty Lukmann 3:17:59 Martin King 3:18:16 Mark Stabler 3:18:34 Charles Desrosier 3:24:24 Gary Gromet 3:24:24 Bob Hogan 3:24:50 Bill Wagner 3:27:46 Don Dore 3:33:40 FEMALES Cathy Corsitt-Damon 2:59:26 Chris Cunningham 3:27:57 Karen Wiggins 3:34:00 Cheryl Fellows 3:39:26 Alice Bard 3:40:29 Pat Dixon 3:54:23 The weather for the marathon and half marathon was perfect with the exception of a easterly that sprang up for the latter marathon finishers. However, as a gauge of the Marathon winner's talent, no Half Marathoner was able to keep up with him. Mark Rosolek of Milwaukee trailed Peter until the 10 and a half point sent them in different directions. Mark won the race in a time of 1:13:43 which dropped almost 5 minutes off Bill McCord's winning time last year of 1:18:36. Bill was second this year and the first Space Coast Runner and improved on his time by over 3 minutes with a 1:15:27 finish. Jeff Holzerland from St. Pete was close behind in third with a time of 1:15:52. In the women's division, Cathy Dowling surpassed the winning mark of 1:31:54 set last year by completing the course in 1:27:05. Nancy Huy-Perry was second in a time of 1:31:52, that would have also been good enough for first last year. Cherly Cobb was third overall in a time of 1:3338. All three runners hail from Brevard County and are members of Space Coast Runners. - GEORGE REVELS OVERALL MALES Time AGE City OA 01. Mark Rosolek 1:13:43 32 Milwaukee, WI 1 02.
