7TH ANNUAL BARGAIN BEACH 10K RUN Patrick Air Force, Fl.--August 21, 1988 No Ordinary Beach Run:A 102-Runner field Sunday begins the 10k trek of the Bargain Beach Run, held on the beach across from Patrick Air Force Base. Butler nips Hoffman, sets Beach record by Barbara Caywood FLORIDA TODAY Doug Butler had hoped to break 33 minutes in Sunday morning's seventh annual Bargain Beach 10k run, but he had to settle for first place and a meet record. Butler, who moved to Cocoa from Ohio four months ago, covered the 6.2 miles on the beach across from Patrick Air Force Base in 34 minutes, 52 seconds to nip Dr. Tom Hoffman of Melbourne Beach. Hoffman crossed the finish line in 34:55, which also broke the record of 35:28 he set in winning the race two years ago. Dede Henrich of Melbourne, celebrated a 20-pound weight loss, was the highest finishing female runner. She placed 21st overall with a time of 43:04. Butler, who took third place in the run three years ago while stationed at Patrick AFB, said he and Hoffman ran neck and neck for the final 2 miles. "I had about a 15 second lead at 3 miles, but at 4 miles we were even," Butler said. "He'd kick and try to pull away, and then I'd kick. "Finally, we just ran together. We were just trying to hang onto to each other. I figured if I stayed with him until about a quarter of a mile to go, I would take advantage of my age (25). He's an old man at 35." Butler, an electronic payload technician at McDonnell-Douglas who runs approximately 55 miles a week, said his pace was slowed by the heat, humidity and running on the sand. "It was slow," he said." I wanted to break 33. I think if it had been cooler and we had been running on the road, I would have." Henrich, a radiation oncology technician at Holmes Regional Medical Center, said she decided to lose weight after faring poorly in this year's Boston Marathon. "It was the second year I had run in Boston," She said, "and I didn't run as well as I wanted to. So, I entered the Physician's Weight Loss program. I just lost 20 pounds and that's why I feel so good." Henrich said she noticed the heat on the last 3 miles, but added, "It was a nice race and I enjoyed it. Of course, when I run where I want to, it's always enjoyable." Among the 102 competitors was Jim Scarborough of Rancho Palos Verde's, California. Scarborough, who finished second in the 50-54 men's age group, is an original Space Coast Runners Club. "I come down here to work on launches all the time," he said, 'and I just happened to be here in 1977 when the club was formed." Although Scarborough helped organize the first Bargain Beach Run, he had to leave before the event, so this was his first time to compete on the beach. Also competing were John Whitt, Ken Brace and Scott Baker, members of the Brevard Community College team which went to the 1980 National Junior College nationals in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.
