16th Annual Space Coast Marathon and 5 - Mile Run Melbourne, Fl.---February 22, 1987 Hickey grabs marathon win; Boston next by Barbara Caywood FLORIDA TODAY Melbourne school teacher Jim Hickey sped through a 26mile 385 yard sauna bath Sunday morning to win the 16th annual Space Coast Marathon in Melbourne. Hickey, 24 , covered the distance in Florida's oldest marathon in 2 hours, 36 minutes and 31 seconds, to finish well ahead of second-place Bill Fay of Athens, Ga., who was timed in 2:53.2. Hickey and Fay were two of 11 runners to qualify for the prestigious Boston Marathon in April. "I swore up and down I would never run a marathon in Florida because of the heat and humidity," said Hickey, a former Rockledge High School state mile and two-mile champion, "but I had to do it because I wanted to qualify for Boston." Officials of the sponsoring Space Coast Runners Club had moved the race from November to February, hoping the weather would be cooler. But, as the temperatures approached 85 degrees before half of the field of 150 had finished, organizers could only shake their heads at the weather's fickle ways. "The first half of the race was wonderful because of the rain," Hickey said. "But when the sun came out, oh my, it was like a steam bath." Sunday was only the second time Hickey, who teaches English at Johnson Junior High, had run a marathon. His first was as a Brevard (N.C.) Community College freshman when he earned junior college All-American honors by finishing third in the NJCAA marathon at Dowagiac, Mich. Second-place finisher Fay decided to combine a visit to his family in Delray Beach with a chance to qualify for Boston in his first marathon attempt. Joining Hickey, Fay and Knight as qualifiers for Boston were David Burnham, Campbell Lloyd-Wallace, Bert Soden, Max Rhodes, Robert Bohanan, Walt Bush, Bill Wagner, Chuck Desrosier and Betsy Smith. ************ Hogan & Whitmore************ There were all sorts of weird happenings at Sunday's 16th annual Space Coast Marathon and Five -Mile Run. Everybody almost came unglued when a guy wearing prison stripes and a rubber Popeye mask chugged across the finish line in 37th place in the marathon. But that was only the beginning. Nine minutes later, in 49th place, came a fella decked out from head to toe in a shaggy orange gorilla suit. Those costumed gentlemen signed their finish cards as Popeye the Sailorman and G. Gordon Gorilla, but they actually turned out to be Bob Hogan and Dick Whitmore . Needless to say , neither ran the entire 26 miles, 385 yards in those outfits. Both stopped to put on the garb before the finish. **************Wagner's************************ Everyone thought it was interesting when Sandra Wagner of Hollywood pushed her 3 1/2 month-old daughter, Christen, the entire distance in the 5 mile run. Not to be outdone, however, was Daddy Bill Wagner, who finished 11th in the marathon. He picked up Christen and her specially made ( for runners ) three wheeled carriage and wheeled her for the final 200 yards to the finish line. Incidentally, Wagner qualified for the Boston Marathon and was winner of a drawing for an anonymously donated round-trip plane ticket to Boston for the April 20th run. Rhodes, Knight rule road By Barbara Caywood FLORIDA TODAY Runners and onlookers who checked out the results board for Sunday's 16th annual Space Coast Marathon did an assortment of double takes when they came to third place finisher. Max Rhodes. . . .73 . . .2:56:37 The observers were astounded that a 73 year -old man had finished third- under three hours. When they found out Rhodes had accomplished this feat in a wheelchair, they were even more astonished. Rhodes didn't seem at all affected by the hot, humid weather or the long ride. His legs were paralyzed 18 years ago when he fell from a ladder while trimming a coconut tree. He took up wheel-chair racing at the age of 71 because" I was looking for some excitement and I guess I found it" This was his 20th marathon and his fourth victory. He has also won 2- 50 mile races. Julie Knight, a 27-year -old commercial art student and a mother of 5- and 6-year old sons, was the women's champion , finishing 14th overall in 3:16:39. She, like Hickey, qualified for Boston, but that was not her intention. "My main objective was to lower my time," she said," but I ran about six minutes slower than I wanted to. I was fine up until 20 miles. Then it got so hot and I had to drink so much water, I got stitches in both sides. I had to stop and walk." Once Knight got over the stitches, she went on a tear. "I blew by a bunch of people in the last 2 miles," she said. I was 40th (overall) at the halfway mark, so I really passed a lot of people." Chris Fletcher, 1984's winner, Sunday passed up the longer race in favor of the 5 mile run. He was an easy winner in a time of 26 minutes, 24 seconds. "I ran yesterday at the Red Lobster 10k in Orlando and had my best time of the year," he said. "I ran this one today as a training race. I'm trying to get my shorter races down and to work on speed to get ready for the New York Marathon." Kim McAliley won the women's 5-mile division. MARATHON 01. Jim Hickey 2:36:31 02.
