Melbourne’s Butler wins Dodger Dash again July 22, 2001 By Mike Connors News staff writer Doug Butler’s entire body was soaked as he crossed the finish line Saturday. A little sweat was to be expected for a runner who completed the Dodger Dash in 16 minutes, 52 seconds to win the overall title. What Butler couldn’t prepare for before the race was that his shoes, shirt and hair would also be soaked from the steady rain that saturated the Dodgertown course. "It was real slow," Butler said with a smile that suggested slow was more than an understatement. "It took a lot of hard work." Butler, 38, a Melbourne resident, had won the Dodger Dash three times before Saturday. In an attempt to gain his fourth title, he brought 15 members of his Holy Trinity cross country team to the race as added incentive. The plan worked, as Austin Joiner, an eighth-grader at Holy Trinity who won the 14-and-under division and finished third overall with a time of 17:33, remained with Butler for the early part of the race. "I didn’t really push the pace until after the first mile," Butler said. "Then I took off and relaxed from there." The steady rain and puddles that covered the course took more than a minute off Butler’s usual time for a 5K race, he said. But the dreary conditions seemed to provide a surge for Joiner, who recorded one of his best times. "There’s nothing you can do about the conditions," Joiner, 13, said. "Just try to get better grip and work around the puddles." Trying to remain with his coach was not Joiner’s lone goal for the race. He was also trying to push his sister, Chelsey Joiner. Chelsey, 12, a seventh-grader at Holy Trinity, said she runs daily with her brother, sometimes for as many as eight miles. "It’s always great running with him," said Chelsey, who won the 14-and-under girls division with a 22:51 in her first Dodger Dash. "It makes me want to go harder." One runner who had no one to push her was Artemis Saridakis, overall winner of the female division with a 20:25. Saridakis, 16, a junior at Palm Beach Lakes in West Palm Beach, was able to pull away from the rest of the female competitors, despite the fact that she had abandoned running for a year before the start of the summer. Though she had not run the Dodger Dash course in several years and battled therain throughout the run, Saridakis was disappointed with her finish. "I was hoping to do better timewise," she said. "But I guess the weather wasn’t too good."
