Matt Mahoney's 2001 Colorado Vacation

Mt. Elbert, 14,433 Ft.

July 6, 2001. Animal (Dennis Herr) and I climbed Elbert, highest peak in Colorado the most popular climb. To avoid the crowds (and to scout a route for Nolan's 14), we climbed the northwest ridge, 3000 vertical feet to the summit in just 1.3 miles. Then we descended the standard northeast trail. Dennis ran down, but I walked to save my legs for tomorrow's marathon.

Animal at the start of the climb, up a rocky drainage.

Looking down at the northwest ridge from the summit. The white line through the green in the center is where we started.
