The race is held each year starting on the Sunday before Memorial Day. Each 50 mile stage has a cutoff of 12:30 (7:30 AM to 8:00 PM). The course is a 3.75 mile loop on mostly flat, sandy trails. There is no fee or aid. The only award is a fake rock for winning the 200 mile race. The course was marked as usual with signs on pie plates and flour arrows. The weather was unusually cool this year, resulting in fast times. It rained lightly on laps 2 and 3, keeping the runners nice and cool, but also washing away the arrows. Several runners got lost. Mike Aldrink lowered the course record by 30 minutes to 3:20:52. His best marathon is 2:29. Helen Cox lowered the women's course record by just over a minute to 4:09:56. Ceal Walker injured her ankle when she stumbled on a jumble of fallen trees on the second lap, and had to be carried off the course by other runners. Wayne Wright was under doctor's orders to take it easy after heart bypass surgery 2 months ago. So he stopped after only 30 miles (after beating me in the marathon). Stephanie Adams had planned to run her first marathon here, but quit after one lap after discovering the race was not on pavement and there was no aid, no finish clock, no volunteers at every turn, no split times, etc. She had arrived with Scott Sturtz, who had previously run 83 miles on the course, so I can't imagine how she didn't know. I imagine they had words on the way home. Jeff Stephens ran laps 3 through 8 barefoot (about 22 miles), but put his shoes back on when the sand got too hot. In the 50 mile race, David Briz lowered the course record by 83 minutes to 7:32. He had talked of going for 200 miles, but maybe he overslept his alarm the next day, I don't know. Out of 38 starters and 6 finishing 50 miles, only 3 started the next day, Joe Ninke, Jeff Stephens and me. Jeff was feeling good until the middle of the fourth lap when he unexpectedly vomited and his last half lap turned into a death march. That left only Joe and me. I followed my usual strategy of going out hard before it gets hot, walking the middle part, and making it up in the evening with a run-walk mix when it cools off in the evening. Well, it worked the first day. On day 2, I had 3 good laps, then the best I could do was walk with long breaks between laps. Joe never tired and became the second runner to finish 100 miles, after Mark Henderson. I could not talk him into trying for the fake rock, so the race ended. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Wickham Park - Camp Slayer, Baghdad Iraq edition 6:03 AM local time, May 27, 2007 Weather: low 95 F, high 120 F, sunny and dry, light gunfire Marathon 50 miles -------- ------- 1. He mapped a 6.3 km loop course on roads, with a climb up Sniper Hill at the finish, so called because it is above the walls of the camp and sometimes you get shot at. Thus, he only climbed it once to minimize the risk.
