Wickham Park Marathon and 50, 100, and 200 Mile Fun Runs May 25-26, 2003 Melbourne FL "The heat is gruesome" -- Joe Herrera "It's a brainboiling rat bastard" -- Stu Gleman "Those turtles are fast! They're as fast as I am" -- Scott Sturtz Thirty two runners, our largest field ever, gathered at Wickham Park for up to 4 days and 200 miles following faint flour arrows, thrashing through palmetto scrub and slogging through soft, deep sand in unrelenting sun, heat, and humidity in pursuit of the coveted fake rock finishers award. We had our first international field as Hajime Nishi of Japan ran in quest of his goal of running 500 marathons in 100 countries. Yesterday he ran the Bayshore Marathon in Michigan. Four other runners came from out of state. Mike Farnsworth, Terry Neuart, Mitchell Hait, and marathon course record holder (3:50) Jason Maki set out at a suicidal 8 minute per mile pace. Farnsworth and Neuart dropped at 11 miles, and Maki at 15 with a twisted ankle. Hait, a 2:57 marathoner, was now leading and on course record pace, but began having second thoughts as the temperature climbed to 90 F. By mile 19 he was toast. Meanwhile Scott Sturtz, who was 30 minutes back, now found himself suddenly in the lead. Scott had been training extensively on the course making frequent 110 mile trips from W. Palm Beach. He went on to win the marathon in 4:56, then went on to win the 50 miler in 11:10, finishing his first ultra. He felt great at the finish, and made plans to return for the next 3 days and become only the second person to finish either the 100 or 200 miler in the 9 year history of the race. But a funny thing happened the next day. For some reason, it now hurt to run. He could only walk. Scott had a lot of time to ponder his fate (3:17 for 7.5 miles) as the heat of the day built, and eventually came to the inescapable conclusion that things would only get worse, and the only sensible thing to do was quit. So concluded the 9'th edition of the race.
