"Big fish" Returns to Capture Tortoise Back to being a "big fish in a little pond," Adam Schiff returned to Brevard Saturday to nab first place in the second annual Tortoise Island 5K Run/Walk in Satellite Beach, benefiting victims of elder abuse. The University of Florida freshman earned walk-on status to the school's track and field team, now up against seniors who have years of experience competing at top level. "It's neat to have him back and see him win again," said a proud Brad Schiff, Adam's father and the director of the Tortoise Island race. Schiff's voice cracked as he handed Adam the award in an otherwise seamless awards presentation. "Now he's off to UF and up against all these bigger fish, so it's a challenge for him. We miss him, and the local sports scene misses him." Despite fatigue from grueling college-level workouts, Adam said he was happy with his time: 16.37 minutes for the 3.1 mile distance. "I decided to run because it was for a good cause," Adam said. "The cool weather and the great course made it a fast race." Adam ought to know the course. Tortoise Island is his boyhood home and the place of many a pre-dawn run prepping for Satellite High meets, winning two conference titles in three years and breaking the distance medley relay for the school. This year the race changed from point-to-point to start-finish, all entirely on the Island. Tortoise Island residents opened the exclusive, private island to the public for the run the first time ever. "It was one of the prettiest runs I've ever been on," said Tom Ladd of Palm Bay, who ran in the race. "I've never had the chance to go on Tortoise Island so it was really a treat to see first-hand all those breath-taking homes. I think if we went out of our way to make runs more scenic, we'd end up attracting more people." A walk category added this year to cater to injured runners also won fans. "I'd do it again tomorrow in a heartbeat," said Kathy Ferdinando of Melbourne, a walker in the event. "It was very impressive." Sponsors of the event and awards brunch include Private Case Management, Florida Today, West Melbourne Health Care & Rehab Center, Blueberry Muffin Restaurants, Krispy Kreme Doughnuts and Carpet Fashions, which carpeted the 70-foot drawbridge spanning the Grand Canal for the comfort and safety of runners. Proceeds will go to help the nonprofit Brevard Guardianship Services move victims of financial exploitation, abuse and neglect from crisis to stability.
