Leslie Pepin, Chelsea Nabors, Malia DeloSantos By Charlie Harris FLORIDA TODAY MELBOURNE BEACH - Bruce Bayliss used his familiarity with the course to win his second straight 13th Space Coast Classic 15K on Sunday morning, beating out Alex Pflurger by 1 minute, 30 seconds. Bayliss was a full minute behind Greg DeStefano at the 10-kilometer point when the race leader took a wrong turn on the streets of Melbourne Beach and Indialantic. This is the second straight year that Bay- liss took first place because the leader made a mistake that cost him the race. "Sometimes you win because the best guys aren't around and sometimes you win because you ran really well," Bayliss said. "I talked to Greg before the race, and he told me that it had been years since he had run this course. "I live just down the street from this course and I run it all of the time." The same thing happened a year ago when leader Len Lally took a wrong turn, handing the race over to Bayliss. "Sometimes these things happen and there's not much you can do about it," Bay- liss said. "Ironic that it happened in two straight races. I didn't have my best time ever, but it's not far off." Rebecca Sparks won her second race in 10 days, finishing the 15K in 1 hour, minutes, 21 seconds. Sparks edged out 2nd place finisher Michelle Lackore by four seconds. Sparks is coming off a first-place finish in the Mardi Gras 5K last week in Cocoa.
