10 K Hunger Run Cocoa, Fl.--1-27-1985 About 200 runners Sunday morning helped raise $1,000 to buy food for the starving people in Africa at a 10 kilometer race in Cocoa-- bringing the Brevard Hunger Awareness Committee closer to its $1000,000 goal. "Hunger Run 1985" which was the last of the scheduled Hunger Awareness activities that began Jan. 20, pushed donations well past the $90,000 mark, nearly double the organization's original goal of $50,000. Local donations and pledges of cash, blankets and clothing have been raised through a number of walk-a-thons, dances, door to door collections and Brevard Symphony Orchestra concerts. And no matter what the event, participants invariably said they got their greatest satisfaction knowing they were helping the starving people of Africa. "A lot of people didn't run at all" said Cherie Dixon, the first woman across the finish line in Sunday's run. "Many walked it because they just wanted to take part and help raise money' Participant John Conners, 38 of Cocoa Beach, said he runs 4 or 5 footraces a year. "But the opportunity to participate in something that is for a worthwhile cause made this one even better", he said. The run was organized by WJZX-Fox 86 radio station. Runners paid $5 to participate Two players of the Orlando Renegades football team and its cheerleaders attended. T-Shirts paid for by WJZX and Sun Ray T-Shirts were given to participants and no promotional expenses will be deducted from the money collected Sunday, said Mike Walker, the station's general manager. Cocoa-Cola, Schnek Co. of Cocoa and Artesia Water sponsored the event, Walker said Seventeen Mr. Grocer convenience stores also helped the fund drive, setting up donation boxes for blankets, clothing and money, Walker said. The money and clothing collected by the stores will be counted today, with all donations to be given Tuesday to the Hunger Awareness Committee, he said. The more than $90,000 in cash and pledges collected will be given to World Vision Inc., a non-denominational Christian relief agency. Barbara Cofer of the Hunger Awareness Committee said donations from county residents easily exceeded the original $50,000 fund raising goal. "I'm still thinking we could get $1000,000 in donations," she said Sunday. We are getting closer every day. Money still continues to come in."
