Nolan's 14 report by T. J. Pitts, Sept. 8-10, 2025.
Nolan's 14 was exactly what I thought it was, a mountain route that would test all the skills and abilities I've learned over the last 10-15 years. I went through 2 nights without a minute of sleep. I battled the wind and snow on summits, dealt with the constant battle of balancing how hard to push and how many calories I could consume. I dealt with the complexity of navigating the off trail sections as efficiently as possible. Not only is this a 92 mile link up of 14-14,000 ft summits with 45,000 ft of gain but the weather and route finding play a huge role. How often your body will allow you to consume food when in between 9,000 and 14,400 feet of elevation is another large factor. It's a chess match with the Sawatch and they have nothing but time, while I'm limited to 60 hours. Problem solving on the fly and staying calm is the name of the game. Due to @msackse having ACL surgery on 9/11 I started on 9/8 which didn't leave me much time to set up pacers/crew. At the end of the day that didn't matter much because I had the 2 most solid humans in my life step up , @msackse and Josh Pater. Josh drove nearly 26 hours straight from Georgia to meet us at the Shavano TH. Josh couldn't have slept more than a few hours over 5 days. With no acclimatization and already running 17 miles crewing me on Shav-Princeton, he brought in a resupply and then starting at 1 am took me over Columbia/Harvard/Oxford/Belford. The entire hike to Columbia summit , we got beat down in a constant cold west wind. We agreed it was one of the toughest nights we'd ever been through. If you ever find a friend like Pater, make sure you never lose them, dude was absolutely clutch in me finishing. Maggie ( having a torn ACL/Meniscus) now couldn't join me as a pacer. This was a huge let down considering we'd climbed basically every mountain together since January. In the end she played the most critical and often over looked role of lead crew. She treated me like a NASCAR pit team and read my mind before I could even ask for it. She shuffled around on one good leg re packing my vest ,cooking for me , changing out clothes , and much more for 57 Hours and 45m. She was my absolute rock, I love this Girl
